Simple chords, solid groove, little sing-note and double-stop fills, catchingly melodic guitar solo, “Proud Mary” has all of the elements that make CCR songs great. Whether you want to strum and sing along, work up your repertoire of fills or build your soloing chops, “Proud Mary” is a great song to learn any or all of these techniques. And the best part about learning any CCR song, playing along with John Fogarty’s guitar groove. This guy can take one chord and make it sound like an orchestra, something I’m sure we’d all love to do.
The song, like most CCR tracks, is pretty straight forward, but the lyrics have caused some controversy, well OK discussion, over the years because of the line, “Pumped a lot of pain down in New Orleans.” Fans and critics alike have racked their brains to figure out what Fogarty meant with this lyric. Did he mean “pain” as in ouch, or “pane” as in propane, in relation to the oil rigs in Louisiana. We may never know for sure, as Fogarty has never fully cleared this up in interviews over the years, but one things for sure, “Proud Mary” is a classic tune that has stood the test of time, and that makes a great addition to any singer or bands set list.
Page delves into the phychedelic realm as he dive bombs his strings. Coupled with his crafty use of effects, Page creates a haunting atmosphere that is the perfect bridge between the songs two main sections. When learning to play this section, it would be good to learn exactly what Page recorded, but also feel free to throw of the reins and improvise yourself. Though it won’t be exactly was Page played, I’m sure the master of ‘70s guitar improv would approve of us taking artistic license in a moment like this.
