Overview: What Makes This Song Great

If there ever was a signature song for a group, “Free Bird” is it for southern rock group Lynyrd Skynyrd. The name, Lynyrd Skynrd, was originally spelled “Leonard Skinnerd,” in honor of a tough as nails phys-ed teacher at Robert E. Lee High School. Mr. Skinner recently passed away on September 20, 2010.
The track, a 14 minute epic, begins as a ballad before finishing as a triple-threat rocker, with a three guitar, 5-minute runaway lead that ends the song. Originally released as a single, the track wound up on the group’s self-titled debut album. It didn’t take long for it to replace earlier audience requests for “Whipping Post” during live performances.

This interplay was recorded on their first live album, Another One for the Road, where audience members hollered, “Free Bird, Free Bird!” when asked what they wanted to band to play. Of course, since then it has become a joke for audiences to call out for “Free Bird”, regardless of the artist or the style of music being performed.

The opening lyric, “If I leave here tomorrow, would you still remember me?” was a question asked of Allen Collins, by his then-girlfriend, Kathy, who he later married. He wrote the question down and it would soon make its way into the “Free Bird” legacy.

Written by Allen Collins and Ronnie Van Zant, “Free Bird” hit #19 on the Billboard Top 40 charts and the stunning lead help the track capture the #3 spot as one of the 100 Greatest Guitar Solos at Guitar World magazine. Free Bird also achieved the No. 3 spot on the magazine’s 100 Greatest Guitar Solos.
