As was so eloquently stated on an Islington tube station back in the ‘60s, Clapton is God. There’s no arguing that the British guitarist is one of the greatest performers, songwriters and recording artists of the 20th century. While he is often recognized for his contribution to the Yardbirds, Cream and the Unplugged movement of the mid-90’s, possibly his greatest contribution to rock and roll was a sleeper hit that he wrote for George Harrison’s then wife, Pattie Boyd.

Written in 1970, and released on the Derek and the Dominos album Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs, this now classic tune didn’t receive much attention when it first hit the airwaves. Since then however, the song’s hard-driving opening riff, long piano interlude and outro slide guitar solo have helped the song become one of the most well-known and loved rockers of the past 50 years.

One of the more interesting elements of “Layla” is the layering that is going on during the song. At many points there are 5 guitars being played, three guitars on the rhythm parts, one guitar on the main riff and a 5th on the screaming high guitar line. As well, guest guitarist Duane Allman joins in to contribute one of the most memorable slide guitar solos in recorded history. Many people assume that Clapton is playing the outro solo, but it was Allman who contributed that haunting melodic line to the song’s outro.

If you are going to learn only one Eric Clapton song on the guitar, “Layla” just might be it.
