George Harrison didn’t write a lot tunes for the Beatles, but when he did he usually hit the nail on the head, and “Here Comes the Sun” is one of the finest examples of his guitar work and songmanship. Written one winter’s day when Harrison was trying to escape the business side of being a Beatle, the now famous acoustic guitar part was worked out while walking around Eric Clapton’s garden of all places.
The song was recorded in 1969 and appeared on the Abbey Road
What makes this an excellent song to learn, besides the fact that it’s a great melody and fun to strum and sing along to, is that it mixes right hand strumming and arpeggios throughout the track. Developing a strong right hand, one that can quickly and easily switch from single notes to chords, is essential for any up and coming player. And what better way to develop your right-hand than to play along with George Harrison, doesn’t really get any better than that!
