Positive Grid Spark MINI Vai – An addictive practice guitar amp with a legendary last name

By Carlos Martin Schwab

Positive Grid’s Spark MINI Vai is a compact and feature-packed guitar 10-Watt Class D amp that aims to provide versatility, portability, and exceptional sound quality for musicians on the go. Designed as a smaller sibling to the popular Spark Amp line, the Spark MINI packs a punch with its array of features in a portable size.

Design and Build Quality

The Spark MINI Vai exudes a sleek and modern design, with a compact form factor (146.5 x 123 x 165 mm and 1.5 kg) that makes it ideal for both home practice and on-the-go jam sessions. Its sturdy construction (Tolex finishing and an interchangeable grille cloth at the front covering two 2” speakers) ensures durability, while its lightweight nature makes it easy to transport. The control layout is intuitive, featuring knobs for guitar volume, music volume, power/Bluetooth pairing, and preset selection, plus an onboard tuner with an LED display. The Spark MINI Vai is a custom-design edition with a few differences to the original MINI: Mandala front grille, Burgundy Tolex, a burgundy/gold reversible heavy-duty handle, a 10’ guitar cable featuring 24K gold-plated connectors and wrapped in a durable burgundy weave nylon jacket, and 4 custom Steve Vai presets.

Sound

Its sound is as addictive as it is powerful. Thanks to its design and its speaker configuration (stereo – 2″ custom-designed speakers + 1 passive radiator at the bottom), the Spark MINI has the best-balanced sound from all the Spark amp series (compared with the Spark 40, the sound is less boomy, and compared with the Spark GO, is less nasal). Functions and Features

Tone Shaping: Powered by the Positive Grid Bias software, this function provides users with access to a rich palette of amp models, EQ settings, and effects via the Spark app (33 amp models, and 43 effects, including Noise Gate, Compressor, Distortion, Modulation/EQ, Delay, and Reverb). Based on the same technology that drives Positive Grid’s popular Bias line of products, Spark MINI Vai inherits its software counterpart’s renowned flexibility and authenticity. Guitarists can seamlessly dial in their desired tone using intuitive controls, while also having the option to dive deeper into the advanced editing features. This integration ensures exceptional sound quality and opens up many possibilities for customization and experimentation. From classic reverb and delay to more modern effects like modulation and distortion, the Spark MINI Vai is packed with a diverse selection of effects to enhance your playing experience. Each effect can be customized to suit your preferences, giving you endless possibilities for sonic exploration.

Smart Jam: This functionality is via the Spark app, and allows users to play along with virtual backing tracks generated in real time. This feature analyzes your playing and generates accompaniment that matches your style and tempo, making practice sessions more engaging and enjoyable.

Audio Interface: Spark MINI Vai works as an audio interface (1 In x 2 Out, 16-bit/44.1 kHz) when connected to a computer via USB. This feature allows users to record guitar performances directly into recording software with high-quality sound. It’s a practical tool for home recording setups, providing a straightforward way to capture musical ideas and create professional-quality recordings. With built-in recording and playback capabilities, the Spark MINI Vai enables users to capture their musical ideas with ease. Whether you are laying down a riff for a new song or recording a practice session for later review, this feature provides a convenient way to capture high-quality audio directly from the amplifier.

Bluetooth Connectivity: This feature allows users to stream music from their favorite devices and play along with their favorite tracks. This feature enhances versatility and expands the creative possibilities for musicians.

Spark Cloud: Additionally, Positive Grid offers access to its cloud-based platform, providing users with a huge library of Spark presets created by both professional musicians and fellow guitar enthusiasts. This feature allows Spark MINI Vai owners to explore a multitude of tones and effects crafted by experts, expanding the sonic possibilities of the amplifier even further. Whether you’re seeking to replicate the sound of your favorite artist or experiment with new tones, the Positive Grid cloud provides a wealth of inspiration at your fingertips. Furthermore, users can share their custom presets with the community, fostering a collaborative environment where musicians can learn from and inspire one another.
