The National GUITAR Museum announced that its annual Lifetime Achievement Award is being awarded to legendary classical guitarist Liona Boyd.
Boyd is the tenth recipient of the award, joining previous recipients David Honeyboy Edwards, Roger McGuinn, B.B. King, Vic Flick, Buddy Guy, Tony Iommi, Glen Campbell, Bonnie Raitt, and Jose Feliciano. Recipients are recognized for a lifetime of contributing to the legacy of the guitar and having a singular historical importance to the development and historical appreciation of the instrument.
Said Boyd, who is composing music for a new instrumental album, “I am both delighted and honored to receive this award. It is a wonderful recognition of my work and the instrument to which I have devoted my life.”
According to HP Newquist, NGM executive director, “This is the tenth anniversary of our Lifetime Achievement Award, and we are presenting it to Liona Boyd. Long known as “The First Lady Of The Guitar,” Liona was one of the first women to popularize the guitar internationally, and was certainly the very first in the world of classical guitar. Just as importantly, her career has been an inspiration to guitarists all over the planet. We are honored to have Liona as the recipient of this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award.”
Liona Boyd’s recording history is among the most extensive of any classical guitarist. Her ability to branch out into the other realms of music, and work with other notable guitarists from Chet Atkins to David Gilmour, has made her unique among her peers. Boyd’s iconic performance of “Gran Jota de Concierto” has been featured in the NGM’s touring exhibition, “GUITAR: The Instrument That Rocked The World,” since its debut
