Rocker Debra Devi brings her “Jersey City Rocks” concept—concerts showcasing the diversity and talent of the Jersey City music scene—to a new live venue, Headroom Bar & Social at 150 Bay Street in downtown Jersey City.
Doors open at 6:30 pm. The concert starts at 7 pm sharp, ending at 11 pm. It’s followed by an 11 pm – 2 am dance party. Devi is performing, along with some of the scene’s favorite talents, including Sylvana Joyce and The Moment, Drum and a Tantrum, and June and the Pushas.
“Headroom wants to support our live music scene, so I want to support them,” Devi says, adding, “It’s a beautiful large room with great sound and a really nice backline that includes a grand piano and a Hammond organ.”
Devi worked on the bill with Carmen Sclafani (Wiser Time) who assists the venue in curating music and events. The goal is to set up a recurring JC Rocks event at Headroom that will continue to showcase Jersey City’s music scene, while also introducing bands from NYC, Asbury and other surrounding areas to Jersey City music fans.
“I know Sylvana is looking forward to getting onto that piano and utterly entrancing us,” Devi says, “As will keyboardist/singer Julian Altbuch of Drum and a Tantrum, who has the powerful voice of an indie Chris Cornell. June and the Pushas are led by Junestar MrBlackman, a very soulful, cool singer with a hip-hop/jazz vibe.”
Devi is wrapping up mixing with Sylvia Massy on her upcoming EP, which includes Gov’t Mule’s Jorgen Carlsson on bass and Rob Clores (Jesse Malin Band) on keys.

June and the Pushas brings elements of soul, R&B, and hip-hop together, often featuring local rap artists at their performances. Rocking on the keys is Ben Krejci, who is classically trained but turned to jazz in his teenage years. Orion, on the drums, leads jazz sessions around the NYC area and has a rich musical pedigree reaching back generations. The trio is led by Junestar MrBlackman, whose sultry soul baritone and extensive repertoire form the backbone of JATP.

Drum and a Tantrum are a duo, but you’d never know just by listening to them. The Jersey City pair – Julian Altbuch (vocals/keys), Russel de Moose (drums/banjo/guitar) create loud, pulsating music that pulls you into the soundtrack to an imagined American psychological thriller — a mix of what they call North Americana rock and bold, dramatic Baroque flourishes.
