Founding member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame trio The Police, Stewart Copeland, steps out of the recording studio and in front of the camera as a music & documentary expert this summer for his first time hosting his own television event for HDNET MOVIES—Classic Rock Week with Stewart Copeland July 16-22 starting at 8pE/5pP. For seven nights, the legendary drummer will help tell the stories of 19 of rock’s most influential artists with a mega line-up of acclaimed rock documentaries.

As host, Copeland will share his thoughts and some behind-the-scenes stories about the rock legends profiled, such as how The Allman Brothers almost inspired him to become a guitarist, the time he played with The Doors’ Ray Manzarek and Robbie Krieger, his brief beef with Rush in the 80’s and more.

The 19-film line-up kicks off with the Copeland-directed film “Everyone Stares, The Police Inside Out” on his birthday, July 16, and also features critically acclaimed docs profiling The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, The Allman Brothers, The Doors, Elton John, Pink Floyd, Roger Waters, The Who, Bad Company, Rush, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Chicago, Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Doobie Brothers, Rod Stewart, Les Paul and The 1982 US Festival.

Reflecting on “Everyone Stares, The Police Inside Out,” Copland said, “It’s something very near and dear to me… as soon as we had a little bit of money in our pockets—we were still starting out—but I got a movie camera. And I shot everything that moved. In this picture, when you watch this film, your name is Stewart because the camera is right in the band.”

“We’ve got seven nights of amazing rock & roll documentary films from some of classic rock’s most incredible legends,” said Copeland, “and I can’t wait to share these films with fans this summer, along with a few fun stories of my own.”

ABOUT STEWART COPELAND

While Stewart Copeland is mostly known for his work with The Police and as a successful film and TV composer, some of his most recent work has been in symphonic music and opera.  Some of his opera credits include “Holy Blood and the Crescent Moon” for the Cleveland Opera, “The Tell-Tale Heart,” which premiered at the Royal Opera House in London, “The Invention of Morel,” a co-commission by Chicago Opera Theater and Long Beach Opera. His symphonic music includes the premiere of “Tyrant’s Crush,” a percussion concerto featuring Stewart as soloist alongside the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Buffalo Philharmonic, the Colorado Symphony, the San Antonio Symphony, and the New West Symphony; and a new score to the 1925 silent film classic “Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ,” with performances at Va Arts Festival as well as in Chicago, Seattle, and Los Angeles.

Returning to his rock roots, in 2017, Copeland and King Crimson guitarist Adrian Belew founded Gizmodrome, a new supergroup that also includes Level 42 bassist Mark King and Italian keyboardist Vittorio Cosma. The group’s self-titled debut album was released in the Fall of 2017 and was described by Consequence of Sound as “an album that rattles and grooves with the palpable joy of geniuses at work.”
