At Lollapalooza 2013, the Postal Service played their second to last show ever, with the last being a Lollapalooza after party the next day. You’d think this would make everybody sad, to be losing such an iconic band, but we really lost the Postal Service years ago. The recent tour, culminating in these two nights at Lollapalooza 2013, has just been a bonus that no one expected.

They didn’t have a crazy light rig. They didn’t have a huge, ambitious production. The Postal Service did, however, have an album and a half of some of the most romantic dance music this side of… Ok, the most romantic dance music ever. I have never seen so many couples dancing and making out and hugging each other tenderly in one place. There was so much PDA at Postal Service’s Lollapalooza 2013 set that you could feel the jealousy from all the people who didn’t have a boo to smooch.

It was quite obvious that the Postal Service felt all this passionate energy in the crowd, and they used it, conjured it up even more, justly making their set one of the most transcendent at Lolla 2013. I swear that there must be some kind of communal psychic brainwave network, because the collective high school reminiscing was palpable. All the memories of first kisses and dances and unrequited love were floating around above the crowd, connecting all these people who struggled through their formative years with the help of the Postal Service. And while this is the last time we will ever see Postal Service live, the beauty is that 2003’s Give Up will always be there, waiting to bring us back.
