Ricky Skaggs once said “I think Johnny Hiland is the most versatile guitar player I’ve ever heard. From Bill Monroe to Eddie Van Halen, he can play it all.”
Hiland grew up in a small town in Maine. He was born legally blind but started playing guitar at 2 years of age. He won a “Talent America Contest” at age 10 in New York and from there he was getting noticed. When his father took him to see Ricky Skaggs he immediately went from pickin’ bluegrass to wanting a telecaster and the rest is history. Skaggs influence as a versatile player with unique sounds and compilations led Hiland to focus on his Blues abilities and develop his own blend of chicken pickin,’ rock, blues and swing while pickin’ in a number of different bands. He is based in Nashville and his versatility as a guitar player has seen him perform with The Don Kelley Band, Toby Keith, Trick Pony, Randy Travis, Sammy Hagar, Ted Nugent, Janie Fricke, Skaggs, Joe Bonamassa, the late-great Les Paul and many more. He has headlined the Grand Ole Opry and TNN’s Prime Time Country program. He signed a deal with the legendary Steve Vai and his guitar based company Favored Nations and released his first debut album back in 2004. Since then he has released numerous other albums. He is an Ernie Ball Music Man endorsee and in the past lent his name to his own signature guitar with the PRS guitar company. He also wrote a children’s book titled “Tuff and Friends” to inspire handicapped children to follow their dreams.
The series is brought to you by Legacy Learning Systems based in Nashville, Tennessee.
