Debra Devi - Silent Night

Debra Devi, singer/guitarist for rock band DEVI and integral part of Fender’s Girl Rock Nation program, has just released a fresh new version of holiday favorite “Silent Night.” This lush indie-rock take on the oft-covered “Silent Night” features a reverb-drenched Fender Strat, Mellotron shimmers, and soaring vocals from Debra, adding her name to the long list of those who have recorded the song, including Stevie Nicks, Bing Crosby and even Boyz II Men.

With “Silent Night,” Devi is found collaborating with Pigeon Club producer Wayne Dorell (WHISKEYTOWN, VAL EMMICH), who adds some soulful harmonies and keys to the rendition of this Christmas classic.

“Silent Night” went live this morning, December 6, 2011 on iTunes, Rhapsody, Spotify and other platforms. The song is being released by Devi’s own True Nature Records, and is being distributed by Redeye USA.

True Nature Records is donating 10% of the proceeds from “Silent Night” to Grace Van Vorst Community Services, a non-religious non-profit group that feeds the homeless and hungry in Jersey City, NJ, where DEVI is based.

Debra Devi first sang her electric-guitar-driven arrangement of “Silent Night” last year at the progressive Grace Van Vorst Church in downtown Jersey City, and she’ll perform it again at the 2nd Annual Grace Church Holiday Concert on Dec 11, 1:30-3:30 PM.

The single’s cover art is by Wiser Time lead singer/guitarist Carmen Sclafani, who sang backup on “Howl at the Moon” on Devi’s debut album, Get Free.

Hey GI, thanks so much for letting everyone know about my cover of “Silent Night,” and the charity it will benefit!

Although “Silent Night” is almost never played on guitar these days, the Austrian priest who wrote the lyrics, Father Joseph Mohr, asked his friend Franz Gruber to write music for the lyrics on guitar so that Father Mohr could have a simple Christmas carol he could play for his parishioners on the guitar. That story inspired me to whip out my Strat and come up with this arrangement of my favorite carol. Enjoy :))

Simply beautiful. Debra’s voice is hypnotizing and captivating.
I absolutely love her voice, no doubt it’s coming straight from her soul.
