This 2 CD set was recorded November 20 and 21, 2010, in Raleigh, NC. Headlining the festival was John McLaughlin, with his current band The 4th Dimension. He was joined on the program by the Jimmy Herring Band, Wayne Krantz, Lenny White’s Group, Ranjit Barot, Alex Machacek, and Human Element.
In September, Abstract Logix will also release a 2 DVD set of the concerts, including interviews, additional performances and more in Hi Def. This label is known for its dedication to contemporary fusion and modern improvisational composers and players, and the music is definitely not for the faint of heart. The compositions are emotional and hard driving, and the solos are everything from thoughtful and serene to heavily overdriven and raucous.
“Strafe” and “Very Sad” are performed by the Alex Machacek trio. Ranjit Barot’s group plays “Vignesh Kirtanam” and “Origin.” Scott Kinsey contributes “Essaouira” and “Sometimes I…”
The Jimmy Herring Band is here with “Rainbow,” “Gray Day” and “Within You, Without You.” Wayne Krantz plays his original tune “Why.” Lenny White’s Group blows through “Door #3” and “Gazelle,” and an lively McLaughlin gives us his usual high energy presence with “Recovery” and “Mother Tongue.”
Fusion fans should find this to be an exciting collection of energetic music. The level of playing is truly outstanding and is representative of some of the best players in this genre today.
