A myriad of artists, including Beck and Snow Patrol, have contributed songs to a tribute album for John Martyn, storied British folk singer and guitarist.
The album, which will be titled Johnny Boy Would Love This – A Tribute to John Martyn, consists of covers of his heartfelt songs, and will be released on August 15th. Phil Collins, Robert Smith of the Cure, Beth Orton, and Bombay Bicycle Club will also be featured on the album, and all proceeds will go to his family.
John Martyn, who had worked with many great musicians, including David Gilmour and Eric Clapton, died in early 2009, very shortly after receiving an OBE, one of the British government’s highest honors.
“John Martyn was unique. Completely unique,” says Phil Collins, who appeared on two Martyn albums over the years. “He had such power, such emotion, in his music that he could overwhelm the listener even when it was just him and an acoustic guitar.”
