Artists never really know when the inspiration for a song will hit them, and where that inspiration will come from. In the case of the Allman Brothers’ 1972 Southern Rock masterpiece “Melissa,” songwriter Greg Allman was inspired after hearing a mother yelling at her young daughter, who had just run off, “Mellissa, Mellissa, oh come back Melissa.” It’s not the most traditional story of songwriting, especially a song that is titled after a woman’s name, but regardless of its genesis, the song would go on to be a huge hit for the band, a song that remains as one of their most well-known songs to this day.
