Released on his 1972 album Harvest, “Heart of Gold” is still the only #1 single for Canadian music legend Neil Young. After hurting his back, Young couldn’t stand for long periods of time, and so he had to play the acoustic guitar in order to continue songwriting. The result was a serious of softer, acoustic songs, “Heart of Gold” being one of them, which characterized this point in Young’s career. Though he would go on to have many other hits, and had already been a star before this release, the song remains a fan favorite today, and stands as the high charting release by one of rock’s all-time greats.
