Peaking as the band’s top single at the time when it was released in 2001, “Plug In Baby” has become one of Muse’s most notable and recognizable songs in the years since it first appeared on their album Origin of Symmetry. Borrowing from a variety of influences, including Bach’s “Toccata and Fugue in D Minor” for the opening guitar riff, Air’s “Sexy Boy” for the bass line and DJ Shadow’s track “Organ Donor,” the song brings together many of the classic inspirations that have come together in the musical melting pot that is Muse.
Originally recorded as a demo in 1997, the guitar on “Plug in Baby” was voted by Total Guitar magazine as the number 1 guitar riff of the first decade of the 21st century. As well, readers of the magazine voted the opening riff the 13th best guitar riff of all time in a 2004 poll, though those types of rankings tend to be heavily weighted to newer bands and songs that are fresh in the reader’s minds and ears. Nevertheless, the song has a great hook, strong guitar playing and a driving beat, everything a rock song needs to be great, in any era.
