In true Billy Idol fashion, the singer was initially inspired to write his hit song “Rebel Yell,” which is featured on the album of the same name, after seeing members of the Rolling Stones drinking out of a bottle of Bourbon, which was aptly named Rebel Yell. Idol, who liked the Bourbon, took it upon himself to write a song in dedication to the whisky, forever immortalizing that night spent with the Stones. The song was co-written by Idol’s guitarist Steve Stevens, who came up with a classic into that remains to this day as one of the finest of the era.
While many people thought that Stevens had mixed a keyboard with his guitar to get that unqiue sound during the intro. Instead, the guitarist used only his guitar to write the intro, after being inspired by Fingerstyle master Leo Kottke. It seems like an odd pairing, but stranger things have happened. Besides the intro, Stevens also contributes a screaming, blues-based solo that is filled with great licks, classic ‘80s whammy-bar dives and tone and special guitar effects. It may not be the most well-known solo from the decade of decadence, but it’s definitely worth checking out.
