One of the best metal songs to hit the airwaves, “Master of Puppets,” is featured in Guitar Hero: Metallica and is a staple at Metallica concerts. Recorded in 1985 at Sweet Silence Studios in Copenhagen, Denmark, the track was released in 1986 as the group’s first single off their album of the same name, with the B-side “Welcome Home (Sanitarium).”
The track has been named the #1 by Q magazine in its “100 Greatest Guitar Tracks” rankings. VH1 listed as the third greatest heavy metal track ever. And Total Guitar magazine ranked it as #1 on its 100 Greatest Riffs rankings. In a readers’ poll, Guitar World ranked it at #61 on its 100 Greatest Guitar Solos.
Metallica is one of many heavy metal groups that came out of the L.A. area during the ‘80s and its current lineup includes: James Hetfield (rhythm guitar/lead vocals), Lara Ulrich (drums), Kirk Hammett (lead guitar), and Robert Trujillo on bass. The original line up included vocalist Dave Mustaine, but by 1983 the band decided to bounce Dave out of the group due to drug and alcohol issues. Immediately, Kirk Hammett was recruited as Mustaine’s replacement. Dave would form Megadeth and lash out at Hammett during interviews and nailing him for stealing his job.
