Heavy metal would not be the same without the iconic lads of Judas Priest. Conjoining guitar leads of guitar masters K. K. Downing and Glenn Tipton into the dark mix added a signature to the group’s sound that would weld heavy metal to the accelerator and “Breaking the Law” stages the guitar duo drive hard.
Coming off the group’s British Steel album, “Breaking the Law” was a hit. Over the years, the song’s arrangement has evolved to include a solo by Downing, and has picked up some speed. But, both only add more depth and excitement to the track that was named the twelfth greatest hard rock song of all time by VH1 (2009) and made it on VH1’s list of Top 40 Greatest Metal Songs.
The video for the track has vocalist, Rob Halford, riding along in ’74 Cadillac Eldorado convertible singing “Breaking the Law” while his cohorts in crime, who include Downing and Tipton carrying guitars as weapons, break into a bank. They’re joined by Ian Hill, who’s toting his bass and Dave Holland on drums. Their prize isn’t a bag of cash, but their own gold record award for their 1980 British Steel album.
Judas Priest got its name from Bob Dylan’s song, “The Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest,” off Dylan’s legendary John Wesley Harding album.
