The Door’s bluesy album, L.A. Woman, was released in April 1971. Three months later the group’s iconic front man, Jim Morrison would be found dead, in what remain mysterious circumstances, in Paris. The dreamy and bluesy track “Riders on the Storm” is a haunting song with the atmospheric sounds of rain and thunder, and the trickling rain effects of from the keyboard of Ray Manzarek’s Fender Rhodes piano.
It’s been said that the track was inspired by a cover song The Doors occasionally played called “Ghost Riders in the Sky,” a tune first released by Burl Ives in 1949. And, although there is some similarity between the most popular versions of “Ghost Riders” and The Doors track, from there the two songs diverge with Morrison’s lyrics focus on a “killer on the road.”
Reaching #14 on the U.S. Billboard’s Hot 100 chart and #22 on the U.K. singles charts, “Riders on the Storm” spins on classic stations, but can also be heard as covers by Creed, Snoop Dog, Annabel Lamb, Carlos Santana, Dezperodoz and others. And the Grammy Hall of Fame inducted the track into its list of top rock songs in 2009.
