Dave Matthews Crash Into Me
When the Dave Matthews Band hit the radio, there was no confusion that the group’s sound was unique to anything else consumed by music lovers. Eclectic, cacophonous, and drenched in superb musicianship, the Dave Matthews Band steamrolled on to the Billboard’s charts with their 1998 debut album, Remember Two Things, that was released on the Bama Rags label. By 2002, the album went platinum. But, it’s the DMB’s avid fans that pushed tapes of the group’s performances around that got the big buzz going for the group. But, it was there third album, that “Crash into Me” hit the charts reaching #7 on Billboard’s Modern Rock Tracks chart. And in 1998, the song “Crash into Me” was nominated for a Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals Grammy.
The meaning of the track has spun around DMB forums with many suggesting the lyrics are about an infatuated young voyeur, while others cling to the idea that the infatuation is more spiritual where the boy worships the girl of his dreams. Still, Dave has his own interpretation that he offered up in the 2010 documentary The Road to Big Whiskey that most of the lyrics were about his wife, Ashley Harper, the love of his life.
Anyone who’s been around Charlottesville, Virginia during the past 20 years is familiar with the story about Dave’s bartending days at Miller’s Bar at the small mall area in the center of town. But, dig a little deeper and people discover that Matthews is not a local boy, but landed in Charlottesville by way of South Africa. As the band formed with its ingredients of jazz, rock, soul, R&B, classical, hip-hop and bluegrass the mix was more a blossoming of free-form styles, where each member was free to explore, improvise and discover a song’s potential; to form its melodic boundaries.
