Overview: What Makes This Song Great

Let it Be Tab

Let it Be

“Let it Be” would end up being one of the most bittersweet songs in the Beatles catalog, or anyone’s musical library for that matter. Released in March of 1970, the song was the last single released by the Fab Four before Paul McCartney announced that he was leaving the band. For a song that would inspire millions across the globe with its message of peace and hope, it also marked the end of the biggest rock band in history. The song has been voted by fans as the number 3 Beatles tune of all time, just behind “Strawberry Fields” and second place finisher “A Day in the Life.”

Though the song was to be the band’s last single, the song was cathartic in a way for McCartney, who wrote it after having a dream about his mother, who passed away from cancer when he was a teenager, with the lyrics “Mother Mary” coming from her. In the dream she told her son, “It will be alright, just let it be,” and history was born. It seems rather fitting that the Beatles would release one of their most iconic songs as their last single, and though they never recorded together again, it wasn’t a bad song to ride off into the sunset to.
