Released in 2010, Avenged Sevenfold’s “Nightmare,” was the first single following the death of drummer The Rev. Though he will never be replaced in the minds of AS’s fans, prog-rock drummer extrordinare Mike Portnoy jumped in and took The Rev’s place, who recorded the demo version, on the single. A huge hit for the band, the song’s video received 275,000 plays on YouTube during the first 24 hours after its release. The single would also reach the number 1 spot on iTunes’ Rock Chart, selling 23,000 copies during its first day of release, and would become the most popular rock radio song of 2010 with over 35,000 plays that year.
Featuring hard-driving rhythm guitar work and tasty lead lines, “Nightmare” contains all of the ingredients that make AS one of the world’s top metal bands today. There are blistering solos, dual lead lines that bring to mind the classic Iron Maiden albums of the mid-80s, and chunking power chords. Whether you’re looking to build your metal rhythm chops, expand your lead vocabulary or work on your dual lead work, “Nightmare” is a great song for any aspiring metal guitarist to get under their fingers.
