In 1979, The Police released what would become one of their classic hit songs, “Message in a Bottle.” At the time, the U.K. group was considered one of the “New Wave” groups to arouse the listening public’s interest and rolled out a string of hit songs. New Wave music weighed in heavy with influences from rock, punk, ska, jazz and the syncopated beat of reggae music and The Police were at the forefront of the success bubble.
Formed in 1978 with band members Sting (lead vocals/bass guitar); guitarist Henry Padovani and Stewart Copeland (drums/vocals/percussion), The Police rolled out their first single in 1978 with the tracks, “Fall Out” and “Nothing Achieving.”
Andy Summers would soon join the group, making it a quartet, but it soon became evident that Padovani wasn’t a necessary ingredient and departed. By 1979, the Police became a club favorite, not only for their sneering, handsome blonde-haired lead singer, but for the group’s musical originality and deep well of talent.
Stewart Copeland is considered by many to be one of the most proficient and talented percussionists around and Andy Summers guitar work ranks him among the top guitarists in the world. By 1983, the Police were broken up, but not before they had made a major impact on the world of music. In 2003, the group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and sold over 50 million albums worldwide.
The trio’s second album, Reggatta de Blanc, hit #1 on the British charts, with two of its tracks, “Message in a Bottle” and “Walking on the Moon” reaching #1 as singles. The instrumental title track, “Regatta de Blanc, was awarded a Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.
