REM Losing My Religion
Out of the blocks, the mandolin riff in R.E.M.’s 1991 monster hit “Losing My Religion” takes hold as much as some earlier modern songs have done with the instrument like Rod Stewart’s “Maggie May,” Led Zeppelin’s “Going to California” and John Hiatt’s “Cry Love”. The mando riff sets the stage for the track that was the breakaway song that opened up the group audience of alternative music fans to mainstream listeners.
“Losing My Religion” was recorded in 1990 in New York and relies heavily on minor chords with mandolin, bass and drums and an intrusion of strings added later at Soundscape Studios in Atlanta, Georgia by members of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. The track nailed down the #4 spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 in the U.S. and charted high around the world.
Hailing from Athens, Georgia, the group joined forces in 1980 with Michael Stipe (vocals), Peter Buck (guitar), Mike Mills (bass) and drummer, Bill Berry. Berry left the band in 1997 to become a farmer, with Michael, Peter and Mike continuing the band as a three-piece ensemble. Their Out of Time album brought them world-wide acclaim in 1992, that included being nominated for seven Grammy nominations and “Losing My Religion” winning a Grammy for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal and another for Best Short Form Music Video.
