Killing in the Name
“Killing in the Name of” propelled Rage Against The Machine’s 1992 self-titled debut album to triple platinum status. The rebellious and profane track proved controversial with its use of the “f” word, seventeen times. Informally called Rage or RATM, the group’s rock-rap-metal music, in your face lyrics and album cover’s raw graphic of a Vietnamese Buddhist monk’s self-immolation all defined a fear or hate of the violent subjugation of people around the world.
The group’s mission wasn’t limited to music and performance, but also to create a platform for supporting social issues and established an activist list at their website called “Freedom Fighters Of The Month” to highlight the work of people around the world fighting for freedom in their communities. In 1997, RATM won a Grammy for Best Metal Performance for “Tire Me” and in 1999 for Best Rock Performance for “Guerrilla Radio,” and by 2010 the group had global sales reaching 16 million albums sold.
Members Zack de la Rocha (vocals), Tom Morello (guitar), Tim Commerford (bass) and Brad Wilk (drums) formed RATM in L.A. in 1991 and held on for nine years before disbanding. After the breakup, Morello, Commerford and Wilk joined forces with Soundgarden vocalist, Chris Connell, to form Audioslave that was mentored by master producer, Rick Rubin, who told MTV was the like the quartet’s “…fifth Beatle.”
