Black Hole Sun Soundgarden
During the ‘80s, a wave of Seattle bands emerged to take over the air waves with what came to be called “grunge” music, and among them were Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Mudhoney. During that decade and the next, another Seattle group, Soundgarden came to the forefront with vocalist, Chris Cornell who wrote “Black Hole Sun,” from the group’s fourth album, Superunknown.
Guitarists should recognize the Drop D tuning used in Soundgarden’s 1994 hit single, “Black Hole Sun,” written by the group’s front man Chris Cornell. Rather than the standard tuning of EADGBE, Chris lowered the sixth string of his Gretsch guitar two notes to a D, with the tuning set up as DADGBE.
The meaning of the song seems to be best left to listeners, as Connell’s lyrics don’t offer much clarity as to the track’s meaning. But, the track’s sonic-lyric connection works, and had enough fuel to launch the tune to the #1 spot on Billboard’s U.S. Mainstream Rock Tracks ranking.
“Black Hole Sun” was awarded the “Best Hard Rock Performance” and was nominated for “Best Rock Song” at the 1995 Grammy Awards. And in 2007, Guitar World magazine ranked the song #63 on its 100 Greatest Guitar Solos list.
Chris Cornell would move on to Temple of the Dog and Audioslave, as well as launch a solo career where he would collaborate with Alice Cooper, Slash and Carlos Santana.
