Steve Miller’s track, “The Joker” shot up the charts when it was released in 1974, nailing the #1 slot on the Billboard charts. The album would sell a million copies, reaching platinum status. His godfather, the legendary guitarist and innovator Les Paul, must have been proud. 16 years later, the song would hit the #1 spot in the U.K., when it showed up in a Levi’s commercial. Not only does the original have staying power, but more recently Jason Mraz recorded a cover of “The Joker” for the Happy Feet soundtrack album, although the track never appeared in the movie.
In the mid-‘60s, Steve moved to San Francisco and co-established the Goldberg-Miller Blues band with band mate, Barry Goldberg, after which, the name became the Steve Miller Blues Band, until Capitol Records advised shortening that to The Steve Miller Band. By 1967, Miller would pick up the now well-known guitarist, Boz Skaggs, and the group’s second album, Sailor, would ratchet up the charts to the #24 slot.
The group would land five Top 10 hits including “The Joker,” “Rockin’ Me,” “Fly Like An Eagle,” “Jet Airliner” and “Abracadabra.” Miller’s 1978 greatest hits album named, Steve Miller Band’s Greatest Hits 1974 – 1978, sold over 13 million copies. And as a tribute to his godfather, Steve helped host a tribute to Les Paul for the legendary guitarist’s 90th birthday at Carnegie Hall.
