First performed in the ‘50s by Texas blues musician, Larry Davis, with guitar by Fenton Robinson, “Texas Flood” is a slow blues number that helped blues master Stevie Ray Vaughan gain guitar hero status with his debut album of the same name in 1983. The album, also named Texas Flood, pulled in a new generation of guitarists into the blues-rock arena, with its hard driving, turgid blues guitar, and the track would be nominated for Best Traditional Blues Recording.
The cover shot of the album shows Stevie in his signature black hat, holding what appears to be a Fender Stratocaster, but the guitar he was endorsing at the time, and the one on the cover with the headstock not shown, is a Japanese Tokai Springy Sound – a Strat copy. Later, he would find a beat up Stratocaster with a ’63 body and a ’62 rosewood neck that he named “Number One,” a guitar that became his favorite axe.
The three-day recording session for the album took place in Jackson Browne’s personal studio that he offered the group, having seen Stevie’s group Double Trouble, perform at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1982. Double Trouble had to borrow money to get to France for the festival and their blues-rock didn’t suit the audience. But, Browne was in the audience and he was impressed as he offered Double Trouble use of his studio to record the group’s debut studio album that went double-platinum.
