Van Morrison Brown Eyed Girl
One of the most iconic songs of the 1960s, and the songs that solidified Van Morrison’s place in Rock history, is “Brown Eyed Girl.” Originally titled “Brown Skinned Girl,” because Morrison felt it had a Calypso feel to it, he quickly changed the name and the rest is history. The song also helped launch Morrison’s solo career as the legendary Northern Irish artist had just left the group Them and the single would lead to Warner Bros signing him, allowing Morrison to record and release his most well-known record Astral Weeks. Though, on a sad note, due to a funky contract, which Morrison signed without any legal advice, he has never received a penny in royalties from the song.
The song features some masterful guitar work, including the double-stop riff that kicks off the track which may just be the most recognizable two-note riff in rock history. Both parts offer unique challenges for anyone tackling this classic hit. The strumming pattern on the rhythm part is steady throughout, giving a nice workout for tempo and groove. On the other hand the lead part features arpeggiated chords, double stops and single lines that all combine to be one of the most “must know” guitar parts around. So grab a Harp, pull out your best fedora and dig in to “Brown Eyed Girl,” a must have song for any budding guitarist’s repertoire.
