The Who Behind Blue Eyes
Opening with an arpeggiated acoustic guitar lick that has become instantly recognizable, “Behind Blue Eyes” has grown over time to become one of The Who’s biggest and most iconic hits. Featuring strong lyrics the song tells the story of Jumbo, the main villain in Lifehouse, which was a rock opera written by The Who guitarist Pete Townshend. Later, the lyrics would cause some controversy as Limp Bizkit decided to drastically alter them for their cover version which appeared on the soundtrack to the movie Gothika.
Besides the song’s opening arpeggios, guitarists can also look forward to digging into some of Townshend’s trademark power-chord strumming. The guitarist is often credited with inventing the power chord, at least on the guitar, a claim that has also drawn some controversy, especially with recording of jazz guitarist Johnny Smith using them on recordings almost 20 years before The Who formed. Regardless of their origin, power chords, especially as they’re used on this track, have long become synonymous with Townshend’s name and playing style.
“Behind Blue Eyes” also features a nice solo by Townshend, one that’s easy to learn, but that contains tons of great licks and rhythmic ideas that will lead to further study. Though he wasn’t known for his lead playing, especially compared to his contemporaries such as Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton, Townshend really hits the mark with this solo, which, at least in some people’s opinion, is the best of his recorded career.
