A controversial figure, Marilyn Manson burst onto the Industrial Metal scene in the mid ‘90s with his androgynous looks, cryptic lyrics and destructively heavy drum beats and guitar work. While many parents ran screaming from his music, kids flocked in droves to his concerts and bought his albums by the millions. While he was first introduced to a wider audience through his cover version of “Sweet Dreams,” it was his original track “The Beautiful People” that launched him to the top of the Industrial world, where we would stay for more than a decade.
The song is built on the “Devil’s Interval” of a tri-tone, which in this case uses the notes D and Ab. The power chords that make up most of the song’s rhythmic work move between D, using the open low strings as the guitar is in Drop-D tuning, Ab on the 6th fret and an F power chord on the 3rd fret. Together, these three chords spell out a diminished triad, D-F-Ab (2 minor 3rd intervals stacked on top of each other), which is the “evilest” sounding of all chord types.
Then, when the single-line phrase comes around the four notes, D-Db-C-B, outlines another minor 3rd interval, B-D. When the B is added to the mix we get a fully diminished 7th chord, D-F-Ab-B, making the song that much darker. Even though he is often chided for many reasons, it’s thoughtfulness like planning out the entire song around a Ddim7 chord, that makes Manson’s music so great.
