Featured on the soundtrack of the 1973 film, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, “Knocking on Heaven’s Door,” captures the soulful finality of a western deputy’s last gunfight with the lyrics, “Take this badge off of me, I can’t use it anymore.” Written by the inimitable Robert Zimmerman, better known as Bob Dylan, the song has been covered by Eric Clapton, Guns ‘n’ Roses (featured in the video below), Babyface, Avril Lavigne, and others. The song can be heard on 22 soundtracks, including: Lethal Weapon 2; Days of Thunder; Rush; Lawn Dogs; and several television series.

The song is nearly a dirge in the key of G major, with four basic chords pushing the tune along (G, D, Am7, and C) giving some emotional weight to the sad lyrics. Reaching #12 on Billboard’s Hot 100 singles chart, the song has been a staple for guitarists for over 25 years and Rolling Stone magazine’s industry and press poll voted the song as #190 in its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

On a side note, Dylan acted in the Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid film as the character “Alias.” Songwriter Kris Kristoferson played the character William H. Bonney, better known as Billy the Kid and Rita Coolidge had a bit part as Maria in the film.

In the aftermath of the gunning down of 16 school children and their teacher in Dunblane, Scotland, a new cover of “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” was released with Dylan’s permission, a rare occurrence. The song paid tribute to the victims and included Mark Knopfler on guitar, along with The Notting Hillbillies and other musicians, who recorded the track at Abbey Road studios. The record went platinum in the U.K., selling 673,000 copies.
