One of Led Zeppelin’s most requested songs, “Black Dog”, was named after a Black Labrador retriever who haunted the East Hampshire, London-based Headley Grange recording and rehearsal studios, where Robert Plant wrote most of “Stairway to Heaven” in a single day. And if you give the lyrics a listen, you’ll know that the dog is nowhere to be found. Besides Zeppelin, the studio was used by Fleetwood Mac, Peter Frampton, the Pretty Things, Bad Company and Genesis. During an interview with Dave Schulps, senior editor for Trouser Press, Jimmy Page explained that bassist, John Paul Jones, came up with the main off-beat riff that helps define the song, and makes playing the lead and rhythm guitar parts a turgid funk blast. First released in 1971, Black Dog ran as a single in the U.S. and Australia, nailing down a #15 spot on Billboard. The single’s B-Side was “Misty Mountain Hop”, another track that was on the Led Zeppelin IV album.
Deena Weinstein noted in her book, Listener’s Guide to Heavy Metal, that the song “is one of the most recognizable Zeppelin tracks.” We have to agree and are certain that guitarists will love digging into the Page riffs that have a “call-response” thing going with Robert Plant’s “Hey, Hey Momma” vocal, but may want to figure out “Black Dog’s beginning that’s just Jimmy Page warming up in Headley Grange. Plant also recruited riffs from “Black Dog” for a couple of his own songs when he added samples of the song to “Tall Cool One” and “Your Ma Said She Cried in Her Sleep Last Night.”
