For many Beatles fans, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band caused a tectonic shift in the world of rock music. And the song, “A Day in the Life,” co-written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, reflected the songwriting team at their very best. Formed in 1960, The Beatles migrated from their musical foundation of “skiffle” music, to pop and rock, before exploring a new sonic psychedelic landscape they discovered and exploited on their 1966 album Revolver, that paved the way to their masterpiece, Sgt. Pepper.
For “A Day in the Life,” Lennon derived his lyrical inspiration from reading the newspaper, while McCartney added his own lyrics to the track that were inspired by memories of his youth. By coupling their independently written lyrics to a mix of ballad, pop, and orchestration, the Beatles and their recording engineer Sir George Martin, produced a magnificent milestone track, one that has stood the test of time.
The Beatles prolific recording engineer, Sir George Martin, conducted a 40-piece orchestra for the tracks 24-bar bridge and explained in the book, All You Need Is Ears: The inside personal story of the genius who created The Beatles:
“What I did there was to write … the lowest possible note for each of the instruments in the orchestra. At the end of the twenty-four bars, I wrote the highest note…near a chord of E major. Then I put a squiggly line right through the twenty-four bars, with reference points to tell them roughly what note they should have reached during each bar … Of course, they all looked at me as though I were completely mad.”
The track ends with an E-major piano chord that fades for 40 seconds, serenely sending the song to oblivion, in a hauntingly moving and memorable path. In 2010, “A Day in the Life” was been named the #1 Beatles song of all time by Rolling Stone magazine.
