Written by Iron Maiden’s heavy metal bassist Steve Harris, “Aces High” is the group’s eleventh single and the second single to roll off of Iron Maiden’s fifth raging album from October 1984, Powerslave. The tracks storied lyrics are about a Royal Air Force fighter pilot battling it out against the German Luftwaffe in 1940 during the legendary Battle of Britain. “Aces High” reached the #20 on the U.K. Singles Chart. Powerslave reached platinum status in the States, and gold in Germany and the U.K., firmly placing Iron Maiden on the map.
In 1975, Harris founded Iron Maiden and remains the only original member working the stage with the group. Steve has claimed that the name, Iron Maiden, derives from the film, The Man in the Iron Mask, and alludes to an 18th century “iron maiden” torture device. Harris is known for his accelerated bass playing, requiring him to chalk his hands to add more speed to his bass line assaults. His trademark style is rampant and complex, most notable when he’s playing an eighth note followed by twin sixteenth notes in rapid succession. He doesn’t use a pick and claims that he rarely practices or warms up for gigs. In 2009, Fender issued the latest Steve Harris Precision Bass, which features an alder body in royal blue, a maple fretboard and a chrome mirrored pickguard.
“Aces High” has become a staple of Iron Maiden performances and is one of the most popular songs of the group. It has been covered by Children of Bodom and Arch Enemy.
