John Scofield – New Morning: The Paris Concert DVD Review

Musical chameleon John Scofield is presented here in a live concert setting. New Morning: The Paris Concert was recorded April 23, 2010 in Paris, France. Scofield has been one of the most influential jazz -fusion guitarists since the 1970’s. His music ranges from funk, to swing influenced modern playing and R and B. Scofield toured with trumpeter Miles Davis for four years, and the unmistakable influence of that time is ever present in his playing.

Scofield is joined here by a stellar group of musicians. Michael Eckroth (piano), Ben Street (bass), and Bill Stewart (drums) are the perfect players to support and encourage his musical explorations. Their flexibility and quickness to react to every musical twist and turn is quite impressive. Each player is an excellent soloist in his own right. That makes this a superb experience not just for guitarists.

Jazz standards include “Woody ‘N You”, “My Foolish Heart” and “Relaxin’ At Camarillo.” There is a beautiful rendition of “I Want To Talk About You” showcasing the chordal magic of pianist Eckroth. His harmonic choices reflect a definite reverence and appreciation of the late Bill Evans.

Other titles include “Ten Taken,” “Slinky,” “Groove Elation” and “Hive.” Scofield is at home here with several musical styles and grooves. He alternates between his trademark overdriven tone and a more traditional clean approach. Whether taking the group through an up-tempo swing or driving funk feel Scofield is energized and musically powerful.

This DVD gives the fan of more traditional jazz the opportunity to enjoy a modern approach by one of the true quality players of our time. Those listeners who prefer the more edgy approach that Scofield normally exhibits will definitely not be disappointed either. I can highly recommend this DVD for a diverse audience who appreciates finely performed Jazz Guitar work.
