For anyone who knows the music of Radiohead, it comes as no surprise to know that their hit “Paranoid Android” was written and arranged as a kind of musical joke. A tongue in cheek reference to the Beatles song “Happiness is a Warm Gun,” the song contains four distinct sections, each written by multiple members of the band, which were then fused together to form the longer form. This patchwork approach to the song’s composition would account for one, the song’s length at over 6 minutes, and two, the fact that many people find it hard to connect the different sections of the song as being part on a single musical thread.

When learning to play this song on the guitar, it’s a good idea to break the longer form down into these smaller parts, allowing them to each make more musical sense as a smaller chunk, as well as making each section shorter and easier to learn than tackling the whole song at one. “Paranoid Android” offers unique challenges for any guitarist, but it’s a fun tune to learn and in the end the effort to learn it will be well worth it.
