How many great songs have been written because a girl dumped a guy or vice-versa? Alternative rock band Puddle of Mudd has an ex-girlfriend of lead singer Jimmy Allen to thank for inspiring one of their biggest hits, “She Hates Me.” Written before the band was even signed to a record deal, and originally titled “She Fucking Hates Me,” the song would go on to be the bands second biggest hit right behind “Blurry.”
Broken down into two sections, the arpeggiated clean beginning and the distorted middle section, the song mixes broken and solid chords that, though they sound easy, are a great workout for your picking hand. As with any alt rock song, the goal is not to be clean and precise, as this generation’s predecesors were in the ‘80s, but to be just sloppy enough to sound good without going overboard. Trying to nail down those double-stopped sections of the arpeggiated chords is harder than it sounds, so keep at if you find that they’re tripping you up.
While it may not be the most technically demanding song in the book, “She Hates Me” is a fun track that offers a bit of a challenge for those guitarists looking to develop their ability to switch between arpeggiated and strummed chords. Besides it’s fun and if you’ve ever been dumped it’s a great tune to sing as well!
