“It’s not a TV studio. Josh, turn these lights out. It’s a fucking rock concert.” With those words Eddie Vedder introduced the video to one of Pearl Jam’s, and the alternative-grunge genres, most iconic songs, “Even Flow.” Though the song would go on to be a mega-hit for the band, it took over 50 takes to get right, and even then guitarist Stone Gossard wasn’t really happy with how it turned out. Regardless of how the band felt about the finished track, it would grow into an anthem of sorts for a generation of teenagers who were looking to bands like Pearl Jam to write music that would eradicate the excess of the ‘80s and usher in the new decade with a fresh take on rock and metal.
While many of the grunge bands have sited the Melvins and Pixies as having a strong influence on their music, Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready went to an unlikely source when writing the riff for “Even Flow,” Stevie Ray Vaughan. Tuning the guitar into Drop-D, McCready has stated that he “tried to steal everything he knew from Stevie Ray Vaughan and put it into that song.” The repetitive rock-blues based riff and blues inspired solo are definitely reflective of SRV’s influential approach to the genre. With screaming bends, classic fuzz-box tone and Texas style runs, “Even Flow” is one of the best examples of the grunge-alternative bands interpretation of the modern blues-rock style.
