The second single released off of Nirvana’s 1992 album Nevermind, “Come As You Are” hit # 32 on Billboard’s Hot 100 list. Fronted by Kurt Cobain with Dave Grohl on percussion and Krist Novoselic on bass, Nirvana hailed from Seattle, Washington, and became the a standard bearer of sorts to a musical form called “grunge.” Grunge would push its way on to the airwaves, leading the way to the end of glam rock groups and include other bands such as Sonic Youth, The Pixies, and The Melvins.
“Come As You Are” was one of the songs on the original, pre-rehearsal tape that Nirvana sent to producer Butch Vig. Cobain begins the song with an eight-minute unaccompanied guitar riff that sonically warbles around given his use of an Electro-Harmonix Small Clone analog chorus pedal. The riff gained some controversy when many suggested it was ripped off from a 1984 single by the English group, Killing Joke, called “Eighties”. But, then one could also go back to the ‘60s “Open Up Your Door” by Richard and the Young Lions and catch an aural glimpse of the Killing Joke’s “Eighties’” riff in that old garage band’s bass line.
“Come As You Are” was the last Nirvana song to reach Billboard’s Top 40 and dropped off the charts after 18 weeks. Director, Kevin Kerslake, found inspiration from the Nevermind aquatic album cover, that featured an infant swimming underwater toward a U.S. dollar suspended by a fishhook, for the “Come As You Are” video that was featured on MTV.
