With so many great songs in his catalogue it’s hard to pick one, iconic and “best” song to represent left-handed guitar maestro Jimi Hendrix. Though there are many to choose from, if put on the spot many folks would say “Purple Haze,” not only because of the songs musical content, but the lyrical content as well, which was emblematic of the ‘60s counter “drug” culture, and of Hendrix’s metaphorical lyrical style.
Beginning with a tri-tone, the “devil’s interval” as it was known back in the day, the song contains one of the more famous chord voicings in Hendrix’s vocabulary, E7#9. This particular chord is spelled:

The chord has become so synonomous with the guitarist that it is now referred to as simply the “Hendrix Chord” amongst guitarists.
From a lyrical standpoint, the song contains many references, or at least interpreted references, to LSD and Pot, especially a brand of LSD that was sold in a purple pill form back in the mid-‘60s. As well, “Purple Haze” features one of the most misunderstood lyrics of all time. Hendrix’s line, “Excuse me while I kiss the sky” has been heard in shower stalls and karaoke bars worldwide as “Excuse me while I kiss this guy.” This lyrical misinterpretation was furthered by Hendrix himself, who often sung the second version in concert, most famously during his career making performance at the Monterey Pop Festival.
