Bob Marley knew how to write songs, there’s no doubt about that, and one of the greatest examples of his musical genius is “No Woman No Cry.” Though it is most likely that Marley wrote the music and lyrics to this classic Reggae hit, song-writing credits were given to Vincent Ford. Ford was a close friend of Marley’s who ran a soup kitchen in Kingston, Jamaica. By giving him writing credits, Marley ensured that the royalties from the song would allow the charitable organization to stay alive and thrive for many years to come. It is events like this that showcase the extremely giving nature that Marley possessed.
The song can be divided up into two sections, the chords and the single-line solo. Based on the classic C-G/B-Am-F chord progression, the chords offer both slow and fast moving harmonic motion, making them both fun and challenging to tackle for any guitarist. The solo features a classic Strat tone and the blues influenced lines that permeated Marley’s music. As is the case with many classic solos, when you learn the notes also take the time to nail down the tone from the recording, see the video below as well.
