“Dammit” was one of the launching-pad hits for modern-punk band Blink 182 when it was released in 1997. Written and sung on the recording by bassist Mark Hoppus, guitarist Tom DeLonge will often add his vocals to the chorus of the song live, where he is also known for adding the hook from TLC’s “No Scrubs” to the song. Though the song would become a huge hit for the band, it was rumored to have been written in a matter of minutes one day as Hoppus sat and thought about breaking up with his girlfriend.
Featuring a riff that is reminiscent of earlier punk bands, most notably Bad Religion, the song contains a mixture of single-note and chordal techniques that are fun and somewhat challenging to play. With two parts to choose from, even in the strumming sections where the chords will sometimes double-up on each other and other times move in contrary directions, “Dammit” can keep your hands busy for quite some time as you work out the lead and both rhythm parts.
As well, because the guitar part features both distorted and clean parts, this is a good opportunity to work on foot pedal switching within the context of a song. Sometimes we take for granted that we’ll be able to jump back and forth between a clean and dirty sound on the spot, but this isn’t always the case. Songs like “Dammit” will help you get that coordination under foot, and provide hours of entertainment in the process.
