ACDC Back in Black
On February 19th, 1980 one of the greatest rock and roll singers of all time lost his life. Bon Scott was only 33 years when he died, leaving an empty space in one of the biggest bands of the ‘70s, ACDC. Faced with a choice, the band decided to continue without Scott at the helm, bringing on board Brian Johnson to handle the vocal responsibilities on the band’s next album. Unbeknownst to the band, that next album would go on to sell 49 million records and become the second highest selling record of all time, just behind Michael Jackson’s Thriller. That album was Back in Black
The title track to Back in Black would quickly become a must know for any rock and metal guitarist trying to cut get their chops in order. The intro riff alone is a masterful piece of musical minimalism that can physically be played in a matter of minutes, but takes a concerted effort to have the bite, grit and weight that guitarist Angus Young puts into those three chords. This is definitely one of those riffs that is harder than it looks, but is worth putting the time into learning.
Aside from being one of the most popular songs in rock, it has also been in the center of a few controversies. Most notably in 1984, when the Beastie Boys approached the band to sample the intro for their own song, “Rock Hard.” Much to the band’s surprise they were turned down, but that didn’t stop them as they sampled it anyway. Others have been more cautious when using the song, as any fan of the Daily Show will recognize Lewis Black’s intro music as being similar to “Back in Black,” without being too close to the original.
Definitely a must know song for any fan of rock and metal guitar.
