Dave Holland Octet’s “Pathways”

Legendary bassist Dave Holland is now in his fifth decade as a jazz performer. His solo work and his ensemble leadership are equally extraordinary. Holland first became a familiar name as a member of Miles Davis’ group. Since then he has excelled as a supporting player with the greats of the genre, a terrific soloist and a creative composer.

This effort was recorded live at Birdland in 2009. It is available in a standard CD edition with a limited run of 1000 copies. There is a release date of March 23, 2010. The group is comprised of Chris Potter (tenor, soprano sax), Antonio Hart (alto sax), Alex Sipigian (trumpet), Robin Eubanks (trombone), Steve Nelson (vibes, marimba), and Nate Smith (drums). Holland’s bass provides the perfect support to the ensemble, and his solos are as exciting and creative as ever. He has assembled the perfect small group with five horn front line for showcasing his compositions. Holland’s originals are perfectly crafted and executed by the octet. Each musician is world class and plays off the other magically.

The opening cut is the title tune “Pathways.” The Afro Cuban beat starts the listener on a fun filled journey of mostly new music. “Shadow Dance” and “How’s Never” are two older pieces included in the mix. Potter contributes “Sea of Marmara”, a pretty ballad with a free flowing melody. “Wind Dance” by Alex Sipigian begins with an interesting rhythmic interplay and settles into a solid latin flow.

Dave Holland is one of the most solid and thought provoking composers and players of our day. His work stands the test of time and is constantly evolving. Fans of both mainstream and modern jazz will be thoroughly entertained by this CD. It truly covers all the bases in terms of being fresh and new while still respecting traditional style and form.
