Forty-five years after releasing his debut album, The New Boss Guitar, jazz guitarist George Benson is still going strong. With the upcoming August 25, 2009, release date set for his latest studio album Songs And Stories, the ten-time Grammy winner pays tribute to some of his favorite songwriters and composers. Featuring an all-star line up that includes bassist Marcus Miller, guitarists Lee Ritenour and Toninho Horta, saxophonists Tom Scott and Gerald Albright, among others, Benson and company come together to produce an album that is not only a tribute to great songwriters, it is also a reflection of more than four decades of experience by one of jazz’s greatest instrumentalists and vocalists.

Billy Gibbons said, “you can’t lose with the blues”. And in Guitar International’s interview with guitar legend George Benson, George talks about how his early boss, Brother Jack McDuff, instructed him to “put some blues in” because no matter where you are in the world, if you play blues, people understand it.

I had initially thought to start this review with a statement that George Benson needs no introduction to the reader, but after receiving blank stares when I mentioned this recording to a few of my university guitar students, I have reconsidered that thought.
George Benson is a true chameleon, but mostly one of the finest jazz guitarists of all time. His masterful interpretation of pop tunes and jazz standards has long been a source of inspiration to aspiring musicians.

Earl Klugh is considered by many to be one of the finest acoustic guitar players today. His playing is soothing and his tone is often downright pretty. Since many believe tone to be in the fingers, Earl’s fingers are no doubt awash with it.

Making a living in today’s music business is tough on the best of days. It seems that the sun has set on the days when one could be just a studio musician, only play gigs or simply teach a few lessons a day and make a living as a guitarist, at least enough to pay the bills and get by.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and make a statement that might just come back to haunt me, but I think that Smooth Jazz often doesn’t get the credit it deserves as being as legit as its traditional and more “hip” cousin.

In the music performance world some artists actually get better over time. The energy and the passion for their craft only increase as they mature. For several decades George Benson has distinguished himself as one of the finest jazz guitarists of his time. Add to that his expressive vocals and scat singing and the musical package is totally complete.
