Van Halen Runnin' With the Devil
Inspired by the Ohio Players’ song “Running From the Devil,” Van Halen had a monster hit with their revised interpretation “Runnin’ With the Devil.” Released on their Diamond selling, 10 million copies, self-titled debut album, the song and the album would help cement the band as one of the biggest names in rock, bringing notoriety to the L.A. music scene, particularly the Sunset Strip and Whiskey A Go-Go, where the band cut their teeth. In that same breath, the album would sky-rocket guitarist Eddie Van Halen to the top of the guitar world, landing him a place in history alongside Jimi Hendrix, Chuck Berry and Eric Clapton as one of the most talented and innovative guitarists to ever live.
The song features everything that makes EVH a guitar hero. There are classic riffs sprinkled throughout the song, harmonics, whammy-bar dives, heavily distorted licks and tons of groove. While there are other Van Halen songs that feature more of the virtuosic side of EVH’s playing, “Runnin’ With the Devil” is the perfect song for up and coming guitarists to check out, as it’s got a plenty of Van Halenisms tucked away in the tunes short time frame, but none of them are too over the top that intermediate guitarists couldn’t learn the song with a little hard work and dedication.
