Nirvana The Man Who Sold the World
Though originally written by David Bowie, “The Man Who Sold the World” was introduced to a whole new generation of listeners by grunge Gods Nirvana. After playing the song countless times in live shows, the band decided to arrange and feature the song during their MTV Unplugged appearance, launching a second life to the song as it hit the charts more than 20 years after it was originally written. Nirvana’s version became so popular that younger fans would approach Bowie after concerts, telling him how cool they thought it was that he was covering a Nirvana song. Needless to say, Bowie had to laugh as he watched his song be coopted by a new generation of fans across the globe.
One of the more interesting aspects of the song, from a guitar standpoint, is that Kurt Cobain plays the lead line, with distortion, entirely on an acoustic guitar. Rarely are acoustic guitars run through a fuzz box, but Cobain takes this opportunity to prove that with the right gear, and a good soundman, it can be done. When learning the song, give it a try and resist the temptation to play the lick on an electric through a distortion pedal. Instead, grab your acoustic guitar, favorite fuzz box and run them both through a giant amp. The results may surprise you.
