Foo Fighters My Hero
Originally written as a dedication to the everyday heroes that we find in our lives, the people who inspire us but don’t get the recognition they deserve, “My Hero” became a huge hit for the Foo Fighters in 1998 before taking on a whole new role in post-911 America. Shortly after the terrible attacks on 911, Foo Fighters lead singer and guitarist Dave Grohl, alongside bassist Nate Mendel, performed and acoustic version of the song that has since grown in popularity, rivaling that of the original electric release in recent years.
The song was thrust back into the national spotlight in 2008 when Republican Presidential candidate John McCain used the song during his rallies. Though the use was legal, and all royalties were properly paid to the band, Dave Grohl had this to say in an interview with the BBC:
“It’s frustrating and infuriating that someone who claims to speak for the American people would repeatedly show such little respect for creativity and intellectual property. . . The saddest thing about this is that ‘My Hero’ was written as a celebration of the common man and his extraordinary potential. To have it appropriated without our knowledge and used in a manner that perverts the original sentiment of the lyric just tarnishes the song.”
Regardless of whether it’s the electric or acoustic version, or who coopted the song for their political usage, “My Hero” remains one of the group’s best known song and one that every Alternative Rock guitarist should have under their fingers.
